    Not so sure what all the hype is about for this place. Having been to Tokyo last month, I can say that I've had better but maybe this is the best we can get in San Diego. Food was good but not amazing so I don't know if we will be back unless it is a super special occasion. The only thing I absolutely love from our dinner was the green tea creme brûlée :) Parking can be a nightmare....

    It's almost unanimous with all San Diego Yelpers - Sushi Ota is the best sushi in San Diego! My favorite is the hamachi belly, the salmon belly, and the mackerel (it's the mackerel where they decorate the plate with the skeleton of the fish, then deep fry it for your enjoyment - yum!). The quality of the fish is so fresh that it's almost a crime to order anything other than sashimi! However, since my wallet can't afford to order only sashimi I also recommend the nigiri. Again, I am partial to the buttery fish of the sea. My friend who has the opposite sushi palette loved the surf clam and octopus. The oysters were also out of this world delicious. I recommend this place to all real sushi lovers.

    The sushi that they served were delicious. But I was scared, maybe bc of what is happening in Japan and blah blah. But I guess it fine because it's in ca, it's not like I'm in Japan. Anyways one of the employee, Arisa was very nice. No offence but even though the store looks kinda bad in the outside but the reality sure is different. But too expensive

    Good sushi and fresh sashimi but way too overpriced. I've had good sushi for far less money. Worth trying once, unless you're very well off--then go crazy every night!

    There's good sashimi then there's amazing sashimi. Well Sushi Ota is just a notch above amazing. My friends and fellow Yelpers have been raving about this damn place for years now. I just so happen to be in the neighborhood and just so happen to have a reason to splurge on dinner. So here goes! Food: O Toro - I've had toro before (which is amazing), but I didn't quite understand what O Toro is. At $14 for two pieces I assume it'd be damn good. Well it wasn't damn good...because it was the best I've ever had. I never had a piece of raw fish taste like it was melting in my mouth before. Now I know the feeling. Other items ordered include salmon, salmon belly, double tuna roll, uni, soft shell crab and tuna. They were all good, but I'd skip the soft shell crab. For the price...it was nothing special. Service: Very friendly attentive staff. Environment: This place feels like a regular eatery...not a place where you would expect to drop a Benjamin on...but it can happen..... Price: Pretty expensive. Expect to spend $50 and up per person. Seriously you don't come to a place like this to order a bento box or teriyaki chicken. Don't be THAT guy. Top dollars for top quality sushi. Food: 5 Service: 5 Environment: 4 Price: 3

    I am not the biggest sushi aficionado, but I'm also not a sushi idiot. I have only been to handful of purportedly "good" sushi places. This is the best sushi I have ever had. Hands down. Not even close. I still envy my past self for indulging in that buttery, rich sea urchin. And oh man, that roe--oh orbs of decadent goodness. I don't know what that means to you, but to me it makes me sad that it's so far away.

    Fresh!! Fresh!!! Fresh!!! Unlike a lot of the other sushi restaurants in San Diego, I never have to worry about the quality/freshness of the fish at this place!! Their presentation, taste, quality, and service are all on point. I've never left this place disappointed which is why I keep going back for more!! Try their secret menu, honeymoon oyster. It's a fresh oyster+quail egg+uni with ponzu sauce. [picture attached]

    Great atmosphere and tasty food. The chefs and staff are friendly and the interior was clean and well lit. However, I've definitely had better sushi for cheaper price (Ryoko's in SF? I think yes). If you are really craving some quality raw fish and don't mind spending a pretty penny, Sushi Ota is an option for you -- personally I probably won't be back unless someone's treating.

    Came back to this place as our last dinner in our SD vacay this year. Unfortunately, they've goe down a bit since we last came. First of all, their portions are significantly smaller and though the quality is still great it's not worth the cut in size.

    Wow. finally found my top sushi place in San Diego and probably will rank one of the top places I'd recommend to eat at. I could have given this place 4 stars because I thought the salmon and salmon belly were good, but could been better, and the rolls we got were also good, but could have done without them and still been happy. But enough of that and onto everything else I enjoyed most. I wanted to take my boyfriend here for his birthday and heard about making reservations but didn't, so we went 10 minutes before they opened Sat night and was 3rd in line to be seated. Luckily, even without a reservation we were able to get seated right away but had to finish within 1 hour 15 minutes. The restaurant quickly filled up within half an hour of opening. We ordered about 8-9 different types of sashimi which came in pairs of 2, and 2 rolls, the double spicy yellowtail and a tuna one I think. Service was fairly quick considering the limited time we had! Presentation wise, the sushi looks amazing. Nicely laid out in little rolls, equally sized little balls of rice on top of a thick piece of fresh sashimi. And wow, I think the first piece we had was the blue fin tuna and holy cow it seriously melts in your mouth like butter. This may be the finest piece of sushi I've ever had, and one of the cheapest, 6$ for the pair! Other highlights were the Toro, eel, sweet shrimp, yellowtail, fried shrimp head (surprisingly really good), and the golden eye was interesting. mmMmmm... Expect to spend money but it's worth it! I'll be back for sure.

    Sushi Ota is a Japanese restaurant in San Diego that is known for serving up fresh, high quality sushi. Located in shopping strip, Sushi Ota may be hard to find but is worth the visit. My Overall Rating - 4 1/2 Stars (Atmosphere, Service, Food, Return) Atmosphere - Sushi Ota reminds me of Kioso Sushi in Maui. Both are small restaurants almost hidden in a shopping strip that focus on high quality fresh fish. There's a tight bar and seating all around for table service. It's tight, crowded, and busy...which means many people are waiting just like you. You'll hear the servers yell out commands in Japanese to the sushi chefs. You know it's a true Japanese restaurant. 1 Star. Service - Our server was good not great. We were there towards the late lunch hour (1:30) and I think she was beginning to mentally check out. It took a while to place our order and equally as long to pay the bill. It was busy when we got there, but was starting to clear out so not sure why the delay. 1/2 Star. Food - As stated above, we were here for the fresh fish. Sushi Ota has some really great sashimi specials. I had to choose the special with uni, which came out served on top of the sea urchins shell. It was an awesome sight, and an even better bite. The uni was smooth, creamy, and oh so good. The rest of the assorted sashimi was great, but the uni was my favorite. We ordered the Sushi Ota Combo B which also came with some nice warm salmon rolls and California rolls for those who want more variety. Given the uni coupled with the value of the combos, I'd say it trails only Kioso Sushi in Maui as my favorite sashimi/sushi (no rolls) experience. 2 Stars. Will I Return? - Yes. If I can get back so San Diego no doubt Sushi Ota will be penciled in. Easily 5 stars had our server not checked out. Doesn't matter though, I'll be back. 1 Star. My Yelp Rating Scale (Sum of all parts): 1 Star - Atmosphere - Is it a cool dive? Perhaps an upscale place? No matter the type, atmosphere plays a big part and I'll give a star if I like it or thinks it has great charm. 1 Star - Service - You can have a great meal with bad service. But that's also what can make a five star joint drop to four. It's important to the dining experience that service is great and on point. 2 Stars - Food - I'll award up to two stars for the food, since this is the main reason we dine out. Sometimes the extra star is given for value, but it's really all about the food. 1 Star - Will I come back? - If I know for a fact I'll return, I'll give this a star. A place has to make an impression for me to return. Each Category can be given up to 1 star except food (2 stars) because I consider all these categories important to the overall dining experience. I will sum them up to provide my final Yelp score.

    so as some of you know I haven't been eating solid food for a long while...and i am slowly bringing it back...so day 1 i had 1/2 cup of cottage cheese...day 2 i was going to have 3 oz of chicken or fish...i opted for the latter...so what better first taste of fish could I possibly have other than a piece of O Toro....and what better place to get it. so on the way home from our Yelp Elite Halloween party...i stopped into OTA to order a single order of O Toro Sashimi "to go"... if i had sat there...food would have kept coming and I would not have been able to resist myself! The fish melted in my mouth! I was in heaven...i think this is the only thing I will ever eat...it will be expensive...but so much better than any other meat! Thank you for making my day!!!

    What's with all the great reviews Yelpers? Personally, after trying this place, I was disappointed and I think it's over-hyped. I came here with my parents because I thought it would be great to take them to a nice Japanese restaurant. The interior of the restaurant seemed really traditional and pretty legit. We didn't have reservations, so we had to wait a bit. They eventually gave us a table, but asked that we finish within an hour since they had the table reserved for another party, which wasn't that big of a deal. We ordered a few dishes of sashimi and some dishes with rice. When the sashimi came, the presentation was nice, but I thought the quality was okay. It wasn't AMAZINGLY great or fresh, but it wasn't bad. However, I've definitely had better sashimi. For the price we paid, I didn't think that it was that worth it.

    The best sushi I have had ever! This place did not disappoint. If you get a chance to sit at the sushi bar I would. I was able to sit at the sushi bar without reservations and was astonished at the quality of the food.The staff at the sushi bar made the experience intimate and personal. The quality of the simplest things like tamago, uni, and natto were delicious. The yellowtail and tuna were also fresh and the portions are perfect! If you get a chance to go to Sushi Ota skip the fancy rolls and go straight to the sashimi and nigiri. The overall quality of food, staff, and ambiance I give Sushi Ota 5 stars!

    Came again and tried the Omakase (nigiri) and was highly satisfied. The service was prompt as before. The fish was very fresh and clean tasting. I don't really know what else to say. If someone I cared about wanted to get sushi in San Diego, I would take them here!

    Despite its lackluster exterior and surroundings, Sushi Ota is a hidden gem. The inside is classy and zen-like. The food is delicious, and as my bf wisely put it, "Now I realize sashimi's potential." Ota Sashimi ($44)- 14 pieces This is not for the beginner sushi eater. The shrimp head is still alive and moving, so it definitely made me uncomfortable watching it twitch as we ate its body. I ended up looking up "pain in crustaceans" during dinner (it's inconclusive, if you're curious). Fry the head after eating the sashimi. After mustering up the courage and with a lot of coaxing from my bf, I tried one tiny bite. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat it again, but I can see the appeal. It was extremely flavorful, like eating meat braised for hours in its own juices. As expected, all of the sashimi were fresh and delicious. Tuna Tuna Belly- highlight Salmon Yellowtail Spanish Mackerel- highlight, paired with ginger and green onion Sweet Shrimp- highlight Uni (still can't beat Poppa's freshly opened uni at the Little Italy Farmers Market) Daily Special- Blue Fin Tuna Sashimi Sampler ($26) 3 pieces of lean blue fin tuna 2 pieces of blue fin tuna belly (Chu-toro/O-toro) Tuna tartare This sampler was amazing. The blue fin has a slightly more sour or acidic taste compared to regular tuna. Beautiful cuts and vibrant color. Hand rolls were surprisingly good. Eel hand roll- sound stupid, but the avocado was the highlight here. Usually eel rolls have dull avocado in it. This one was a nice green-yellow and complemented the eel very nicely. Salmon skin hand roll- salmon skin (in the texture of bonito flakes) with smoked salmon, very good as well Don't miss the desserts. There's only ice cream and mochi ice cream on the menu, but off the menu, there's green tea creme brulee ($5.50). Think creme brulee with lots of matcha powder. The service is fantastic. Don't be afraid to ask questions. The staff is great with answering questions, giving recommendations, and explaining what things are. Most important tip: make reservations!

    Before coming to visit San Diego. My friend told me about this sushi place. Oh My! Boy was it good! It's a must if you love raw fish. Here are the items I got: The Osusume Sushi Set - $30- but worth it!!!! even the masago sushi, which is normally not my preference was good as well. Oto Sashimi Set: $50 - Yes very pricey, but I was also a little disappointed bc they didn't have Uni that night, so they gave us a $5 discount (This was the only very disappointing thing) ***Please have them fry the shrimp head at the end. it is amazing, especially the dipping sauce that they give you**** Yellowtail belly- Very very good! Unagi handroll- typical, but Iove eel, so this was yummy!

    Came here for dinner with a reservation but they weren't able to seat us at the sushi bar because we had a reservation for 3 (they apparently only seat even numbers at the bar). We were able to order sushi, but obviously not omakase.... so everything showed up on a plate at the same time. The fish is really fresh and I enjoyed my meal, however, it took away from the omakase experience everyone was telling me about. I am determined to return again for that full experience. Will update my review when that happens. Service was attentive even though they were really busy.

    OMG! This place is the best for sushi. The quality of the fish is excellent! The environment is so Japanese :)) great experience. I never miss to visit when I'm San Diego!!! It's always extremely busy so would recommend to do a reservation
